It is very important to maintain a healthy diet; this becomes all the more important when you are pregnant. During pregnancy, the body needs additional vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. A diet that lacks proper nutrients might have an adverse effect on the health of the mother and baby. Fresh, healthy home cooked meals – salads, greens, gravies from a casserole and dairy, a well balanced meal is most important during pregnancy. Here are some superfoods that you can eat when you are pregnant.

Legumes

Legumes are excellent sources of iron, folate, protein, calcium, and fiber. These are plant-based sources of nutrients and include chickpeas, peas, peanuts, lentils, and beans. Folate is of crucial importance for the health of the baby and the mother during pregnancy.  Legumes are also known to reduce the risk of birth defects and diseases.

Dairy products

You need to consume extra protein and calcium when you are pregnant. Dairy products are great when it comes to protein content as well as calcium. They also contain magnesium, phosphorous, vitamin B, and zinc. Yogurt is very beneficial for expecting mothers as it supports digestive health.

Sweet potatoes

It is a great idea to include sweet potatoes in your diet. Sweet potatoes are rich in beta carotene which is converted into vitamin A inside the body. Vitamin A is very essential for the healthy development of the baby. Sweet potatoes also contain fiber and improve digestive health.

Eggs

Eggs contain large quantities of proteins and fats. They are also rich in minerals and vitamins. Eggs are rich sources of choline. The latter is necessary for the development of the brain.

Green leafy vegetables

Green leafy vegetables contain lots of vitamin K, C, and A as well as potassium and iron. Green leafy vegetables are also rich in fiber and will lower the risk of low birth weight.
