Fish Oil: Does it Improve Asthma Symptoms?

Fish oil has been promoted as a natural remedy that can treat asthma and other respiratory ailments. This is primarily because fish oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can alleviate some of the inflammation in the lungs.  But a recent study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, has released information that refutes this thinking. The study essentially says that fish oil supplements are most likely not able to positively influence the weight in adolescents and young adults with uncontrolled asthma.

The researchers held a study featuring 100 obese people between the ages of 12 and 25 years. These children had poor asthma control regardless of using a daily inhaled corticosteroid. Using a standard asthma control questionnaire, that analyzed hospital visits, urgent care visits, breathing tests, and other asthma problems, they found no correlation between increased fish oil intake and improved asthma control.

Instead of fish oil, there are some other foods that you can include in your diet to provide respiratory relief:

Amla

Amla is rich in vitamin C, which is an important vitamin to help keep your lungs functioning properly. It helps to improve your overall immunity and decreases the inflammatory response in the airways. It also helps to decrease the spasms of the bronchial passage ways.

Garlic And Ginger

Garlic is a natural anti-inflammatory and antibiotic. Consuming garlic regularly can help soothe your air passageways and provide respiratory relief. Include it in your soup, tea, broth, or chicken.

Flaxseeds

Flaxseed has omega-3 fatty acids, which is an anti-inflammatory that can help you deal with asthma symptoms. Eat flaxseed during winter and spring, seasons where asthma attacks increase.
