Do’s and Don’ts When You have Type-2 Diabetes

Those with type-2 diabetes should watch their diet as the choice of the foods can have an important bearing on their blood sugar levels. Consumption of right food can help reduce and stabilize blood sugar levels. If you have type-2 diabetes, it doesn’t mean you’ll have to give up on eating all your favorite foods. What this means is that with a balanced diet that combines the right amount of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, you can enjoy a much healthier lifestyle.

Foods to eat and avoid

  • Make sure that nearly half of your plate comprises of non-starchy veggies. These include greens such as spinach as well as broccoli and cauliflower in addition to onions and peppers. You can also eat sweet potatoes, corn, and peas in moderate amounts.
  • Have lots of lean protein, low-fat or fat-free dairy products, seeds, nuts, whole grains, and small amounts of fresh fruits.
  • It is important to limit your consumption of processed carbohydrates and sugar which are found in packaged snacks such as potato chips, corn chips, and soda.
  • You must consult your doctor when it comes to the use of artificial sweeteners which are added to a variety of products these days. While these won’t raise your blood sugar, they could still have an impact on your body’s blood sugar levels and change its insulin response as well. There is a need for greater studies in this area.
  • Whole-grain cereals, whole-grain pasta, and brown rice are great choices when eaten in moderate amounts
  • It is best to avoid white pasta, white rice, white bread, and pastries.
  • Amongst dairy products, you can consume non-fat plain Greek yogurt, skim milk, and low-sodium cottage cheese.
