Does a Mediterranean Diet Work Well for Diabetics?

The Mediterranean diet inevitably includes olive oil. Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits and vegetables and is considered healthy for people who suffer from diabetes. The diet is known to have originated from Southern Italy and Greece. Studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet decreases the chances of developing diabetes. The diet does not deprive the body of any vitamins and minerals as it is a balanced diet that provides the body with all the needed nutrients.

What is a Mediterranean Diet?

Mediterranean diet is composed of poultry, fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes, olive oil, fresh bread, oily fish, and pasta. The main reason behind the Mediterranean diet being considered healthy is that it has a very high vegetable content. Vegetables such as olives, peppers, onions, tomatoes, aubergines, and lettuce are good for blood glucose.

The Mediterranean diet includes the intake of fats from foods such as yogurt, avocado, nuts, and mozzarella cheese. Poultry, eggs, seeds, nuts, and beans provide the protein content. Freshly made pasta and bread provide the carbohydrates.

Why is the Mediterranean diet recommended for diabetics?

Mediterranean diet is recommended for diabetics as it has unsaturated fats and includes a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables and there are no processed foods involved.

A moderate diet, when combined with regular exercise, promotes good heart health. It also lowers the risk of developing cancer and type-2 diabetes.

Olive oil, whole grains, yogurt, fruits, and vegetables don’t sound like dieting. These are components of the Mediterranean diet and are known to reduce the risk of type-2 diabetes.
