Mushrooms are edible fungi that have a near mythic reputation. The very idea of mushrooms are deeply embedded in human culture from across the globe. They exist in all manner of our stories – everything from ‘fairy rings’ to Mario’s growth mushroom. Some are believed to be magical, others are eaten as natural health remedies, and others just taste really amazing. This article will explore mushrooms and their health benefits.

Note: It is important to note, that mushrooms are different than truffles. Although they are both fungi, truffles grow underground, while mushrooms grow above ground. Besides that, there isn’t much difference.

Mushrooms are nutrient dense foods that are much loved for their myriad of health benefits. Some of the more substantial vitamins and minerals contained in your typical mushroom are: potassium magnesium phosphorous, sodium, vitamin C, riboflavin, thiamin, niacin, vitamin D, and folate.

Mushrooms contain prodigious amounts of vitamin D. They are one of the rare plant based sources of the essential vitamin. One of the most important aspects of vitamin D is it has the ability to facilitate the absorption of metabolization of nutrients, specifically, phosphorous and calcium.

High in Selenium

Mushrooms are a powerful source of selenium, a mineral that has many health benefits all on its own. Selenium has antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. They work together to reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, thyroid disease, and the reduction of cognitive faculties. It can also improve your bone, teeth, hair, and nails strength.

Immune System Booster

Mushrooms contain ergothionenie, an amazing antioxidant that protects your body from free radicals. The antioxidant is made of sulfur which is a compound people are often deficient in. Sulfur is considered by many to be a “master antioxidant”.
