A Plant-Based Diet Might Be the Best Cure for Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s disease is an unfortunate inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It causes your digestive tract to become inflamed. This can lead to a whole host of unfortunate symptoms such as, severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, fatigue, and malnutrition. The inflammation caused by Crohn’s disease can also lead to other areas of the digestive tract becoming infected. But typically, the final small segment of the large intestine and the colon are affected by Crohn’s disease.

The specific cause of Crohn’s disease is currently unknown, although in the past, both diet and stress were the biggest suspects. But the current general consensus amongst medical professionals now believes that these factors only contribute to the Crohn’s disease. Currently, there are two theories as to what might cause Crohn’s disease:

Immune System

Crohn’s disease is possibly triggered by a virus or bacterium. It might be an abnormal immune response to your body fighting off the infection. The immune response will cause your body to attack the cells of the digestive tract.

Heredity

Crohn’s disease has been observed to be more common in people who have family members with the disease, which suggests that a person’s genes may make them more susceptible to obtaining the disease.

Treating Crohn’s Disease

The typical treatment process for Crohn’s disease involves taking a regiment of immune system suppressors and antibiotics. In the wort case scenario, surgery is used to remove legions inside the digestive tract.

A new case study has offered a much simpler and less invasive treatment method. All you have to do is switch to a plant-based diet. Researchers can’t tell you exactly why this works, but one long time Crohn’s sufferer recently found success and was able to send his disease into remission. This particular diet removed all animal product, in other words, it was vegan. This is a major breakthrough considering that currently, only about 10 percent of patients undergoing traditional Crohn’s treatment managed to achieve long term remission.
