Surul Poori

Surul Poori, also called Surul Poli, is one of the most liked traditional recipes which are often prepared during any Tamil festival. This dish originated in Tanjore where this poli is also known as Suruttai Poli.This Surul is a roll that is first fried then stuffed with coconut, roasted gram and sugar. This preparation is much easier than the traditional method.

As Surul Poori is prepared with almost all dry nuts and fruits like almonds, cashews, raisins and pistachios which is great for health. Cashews are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Almonds are great source for vitamin E, copper, magnesium and high quality protein. Raisins are good for source of fiber, vitamins and minerals. Pistachios keep your heart healthy in reducing bad cholesterol which prevents the heart diseases.

Ingredients

tsp ghee: 1

cup each cashews, almonds, pistachios, and raisins: 1/2

cup fresh grated coconut: 1/2

cup sugar: 1

cup roasted gram: 1

cup all-purpose flour (maida): 1

tsp ground cardamom: 1

Few drops yellow food color

dates, chopped: 1-2

Cherries/ tutti frutti (for garnishing)

oil for frying

How To Make Surul Poori

  1. Heat 3 tbsp. of the ghee in a pan. Add cashews,almonds, pistachios and 1/4 cup of the coconut. Toast until golden in color. Grind all these along with sugar(reserve 2 tbsp. sugar for later use) and roasted gram to make it a fine powder.
  2. In a mixing bowl, place flour, cardamom, 2 tbsp. sugar, yellow food color, 1 tsp. ghee and enough water to make soft dough. Knead then let it rest for 20 minutes.
  3. Divide this dough into equal parts and roll them like a chapathi/ poori, neither too thick nor too thin.
  4. Place the ground nuts mixture in a bowl and add raisins, dates and add some tutti frutti.
  5. Heat oil in pan for frying. When oil is hot enough, add the rolled poori in batches.
  6. Using a ladle, press a little in the center gently along the edges so they puff a little bit. Turnpoori over and cook until crispy on both sides.
  7. Sprinkle a plate with the nut powder. Place a poori on the plate and sprinkle with more nut powder.Roll up while still hot so the edges stick well.
  8. Garnish with colored ghee, remaining grated coconut, tutti frutti and cherries.

Trivia:

This recipe of Surul Poori has been originated from Tanjore and there you can even find another popular sweet which is known as Ashoka Halwa/ Moongdal Halwa but Surul Poori always tops on chart. You can prepare the dish in very less time and the variations that are used is beetroot poli or surul poli with wheat flour.
