Stuffed Idli

Idli are savory rice cakes that serve as popular breakfast foods throughout India and its neighboring countries. They are made by steaming a batter made up of fermented black lentils and rice. This particular recipe introduces a stuffed variation of the idli so you can put a new twist on an old favorite. Pack these idlis with your favorite bite sized foods and enjoy. Ingredients

finely chopped onion: 1

large potato – boiled, peeled and properly mashed: 1

teaspoon mustard seeds: 1

tomatoes – properly chopped: 2

teaspoon split urad dal: 1

teaspoon oil: 1

teaspoon red chilli powder: 1

capsicum – chopped: 1

teaspoon turmeric powder: 1/3

Small handful coriander leaves – finely chopped

Idli batter, as required

cup water: 1/3

salt to taste

How To Make Stuffed Idli

  1. Heat a medium kadai. Add split urad dal and mustard seeds. Now, add finely chopped tomatoes and onions and fry until transparent.
  2. On a medium flame, add capsicum and fry for 1-2 minutes. When properly cooked, add turmeric, red chilli powder, and little salt. Fry everything until they become mushy and into a masala.
  3. On a medium flame, add the well-mashed potato and gently stir everything together for 1 minute.
  4. Add water, cover the kadai and cook on a low flame for 5-7 minutes or till veg are well-cooked. If the mixture is too dry, sprinkle little water and stir well. Add chopped coriander leaves.
  5. Once the mixture finally becomes dry masala, remove from heat and set aside to cool for some time.
  6. To make your stuffed idli, add some oil to the idli plate to the grease it. Now, pour ½ ladle of batter and gently spread evenly. Add 1 tablespoon of masala and plunk over the idly batter on the plate. Add another layer of idli butter above the filling and gently close it.
  7. Steam the idli until well cooked. Remove from heat and transfer to serving plate.
  8. Your delicious Stuffed Idli dish is finally ready. It is best to serve hot.
