A healthy twist to the traditional savory, and here is a version of chakli that is made of whole wheat flour! A few handy ingredients and an hour of your time is all is needed to rustle up some delicious chakli that makes a great snack for you to munch between your meals, and works perfect as a tea time snack in the evening too! Whole wheat is an important source of many nutrients including fiber, B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and folate) and minerals (iron, magnesium, and selenium). Including whole wheat in your diet also helps in lowering the risk of type-2 diabetes.
Ingredients
whole wheat flour: 4 cups
rice flour: 1/4 cup
sesame seeds: 2 tbsp
red chili powder: 4 tsp
ground coriander: 2 tsp
carom seeds: 1/2 tsp
ground turmeric: 1/2 tsp
salt to taste
vegetable oil plus additional for frying: 3 tbsp
plain yogurt or curd: 1 cup
plain yogurt: 6 tbsp
How To Make Chakli
- Mix wheat flour and rice flour in a bowl.
- In a steam cooker, steam the flour mix for about 15 minutes
- Allow it to cool a bit and use a fork to separate the stiff flour.
- Sieve the flour into a bowl.
- Add sesame seeds, red chili powder, ground coriander, carom seeds, ground turmeric, salt to taste, 3 spoons of oil, and the yogurt to the sifted flour.
- Mix well.
- Add water as needed and knead the flour.
- Tip: The flour has to be stiff.
- Prepare the chakli mould – Fix the star attachment into the mold.
- Take a small portion of the dough and fill the chakli mould.
- Heat oil in a deep pan.
- Press the mould, gently dispersing the dough in oil.
- Deep fry until the chakli turns golden on both the sides.
- Serve and enjoy.

Chaklis are known by different names in different parts of India. In Kannada it is chakkuli, in Gujarati it is known as chakri, in Telugu it is called chakralu or jantikalu, and in Konkani it is chakri or chakkuli.
