Belgian Buttermilk Waffles

Waffles have long been considered one of the great gifts of Belgian cuisine to the rest of the world. Not only are they an extremely delicious item to enjoy, they’re also extremely easy to make and can easily be customized to cater to the different flavor profiles of the people around the world. It is an item that can be eaten for breakfast and for a lunch. It’s the sort of item that would go well in summer, winter, autumn or even spring. It is truly an evergreen dish that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Ingredients

all-purpose flour: 2 cups

tablespoons of sugar: 2

baking powder: 2 tsp

baking soda: 1 tsp

tsp of salt: 1

well-shaken buttermilk: 2 cup

unsalted butter, melted and cooled to room temperature: 3/4 stick

Large eggs: 2

vegetable oil for waffle iron

unsalted butter: 2 tbsp

firm-ripe large bananas (cut diagonally): 2

pure maple syrup: 1 1/4 cups

sour cream or whipped cream

How To Make Belgian Buttermilk Waffles

  • You’ll preferably need a waffle iron of your own. Make sure you have arranged it before preparing waffles.
  • Preheat the waffle iron and oven at 250 degrees F.
  • Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt together in a large bowl.
  • Once the mixture is consistent enough, mix in buttermilk, melted butter, eggs and a flour mixture.
  • Combine them well enough to get the perfect consistency.
  • Coat the waffle iron with vegetable oil.
  • Pour some batter on each waffle mold to properly prep it.
  • Cook the batter using the waffle iron as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Keep cooking for at least 3 minutes.
  • Keep transferring the waffles to the rack in order to keep them warm and crisp.
  • When cooking the last waffle, separately heat butter in a skillet.
  • Add any fruits you want to add and let them glaze together.
  • Add the syrup to the waffles separately.

  • The name waffle comes from a Scottish term “waff” which means to “yell like a puppy”
  • Waffles have been around the since the Middle Ages.
