Role of Vitamin C in Skin Care

You are probably used to using vitamin C as an immune system booster; that is what vitamin C is typically advertised as after all. But that is only touching the tip of the iceberg when it comes to discussing the health benefits of vitamin C. It is so much more than an immune system booster, it is actually an amazing component for treating your skin. An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but an orange a day can keep you looking young forever.

Read on to see what vitamin C can do to improve your skin:

What Vitamin C Does for Your Skin

Fights free radicals

Vitamin C is actually an antioxidant, which we normally associate with improving the immune system. But it also kills the free radicals that can accumulate on your skin and make it look aged and wrinkly. It can also result in skin cancer.

Boosts collagen production

Vitamin C plays a significant role in stabilizing and crating collagen molecules which is why it is used as an anti-aging ingredient. Some studies even suggest that vitamin C can actually improve the quality of the collagen your body creates.

Reduces brown spots

Vitamin C helps your skin to heal itself. This is exactly what you want when you’re trying to remove spotting, like brown spots and red spots on your skin. Vitamin C also has anti-inflammatory properties which can help to treat skin conditions, such as, acne or rosacea.

Citric fruit is most often spouted as the best source of vitamin C, but you can also get a lot of vitamin C by eating your veggies. Specifically, bell peppers are the official king of vitamin C content. They have three times as much vitamin C as an orange. So you can eat all the vitamin C you need by turning up the heat in the kitchen.
