Aam panna is a wonderful and delicious drink that is consumed in India as a means of beating the heat. It is prepared using raw mangoes, which give it its distinctive coloring, which ranges from yellow from a very light green color. Sometimes, people add mint leaves to their aam panna, as a means of enhancing the flavor and refreshing properties of the drink.

This wonderful drink helps you to beat the heat and quench your thirst by helping your body to retain sodium and other essential compounds. It also helps with the digestive process and treats gastrointestinal disorders, making it a wonderful aperitif. The vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin C, and niacin properties also help to combat certain chronic conditions, such as, tuberculosis, cholera, anemia, and dysentery.

The best thing about aam panna is that you can make it yourself at home. That way it is always fresh and its medicinal properties will be able to operate at their maximum potential. Below, is a simple recipe for aam panna that you can begin making today. It shouldn’t take you more than an hour to make your first batch of aam panna.

Ingredients

500 g green mangoes
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp salt
2 tsp kala namak (black rock salt)
2 tsp roasted and powdered cumin seeds
2 tbsp finely chopped mint leaves
2 cups water

Procedure

  1. Boil the mangoes till they become soft inside, and the skin gets discolored.
  2. When cool enough to handle, remove the skin and squeeze the pulp out of the mangoes.
  3. Mix all the ingredients together, blend and add 2 cups of water.
  4. Add some ice in the glasses and pour the panna over it.
