Ingredients

medium-sized russet potatoes (cut and peeled): 8-10

cup hot milk: 1/4

tsp salt: 1

tbsp butter (optional): 2

Dash pepper

How To Make Mashed Potatoes

  1. In a saucepan, boil water, and potatoes with about ¾ tsp of salt. Bring to boil, reduce the heat to medium or low and place lid, but leave some room for the steam to escape.
  2. Let the potatoes cook for about 20 minutes.
  3. Drive a fork inside the potatoes. If the potatoes fall apart, they are done.
  4. Drain the water and transfer boiled potatoes to another dish and mash them well.
  5. Heat butter in a saucepan over low heat, add mashed potatoes and the remaining salt and keep stirring. Add milk gradually till the potatoes become smooth and creamy.
  6. Enjoy creamy, yummy mashed potatoes!

It is claimed that it took a while before potatoes were accepted in America. It took seven Atlantic crossings before this could happen. Potatoes were not really known until Benjamin Franklin discovered them. During the time he was ambassador to France, he attended a banquet hosted by Parmentier and potato was served there in about 20 different ways. He returned to America and reported his discovery. It became known in America this way and the trend set by Franklin became more popular that before long, colonies and remote region of the western frontier began to plant potatoes.
