Trivia

The name ‘garlic’ is a combination of two words – ‘gar’ which means spear and ‘lac’ which means plant. The name was given due to the shape of the leaves of the garlic plant.  Garlic was believed to give extraordinary strength in ancient times. Olympic athletes in ancient Greek were fed garlic before the games to improve their performance.

Garlic’s mosquito repellent properties may have been the reason behind garlic being used against vampires in the novel ‘Dracula’. Writer Bram Stoker wrote the famous novel Dracula in 1897 about a blood-sucking vampire. The main protagonist used garlic to protect himself from the vampires! Interestingly, the fear of garlic is called Alliumphobia!
