Classic BLT sandwich

No American picnic and school lunch will be complete without a toasted BLT sandwich. A favourite among adults and children, a BLT is a simple yet delicious sandwich with crispy textures. The name of the sandwich stands for Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato, which are the main ingredients.

BLT sandwiches are made with grilled bacon, tomatoes and lettuce layered on toasted bread, often including various condiments, seasonings, and cheeses. The sandwiches are incredibly easy to prepare and require a few ingredients you will be able to find your pantry easily.

You can enjoy this sandwich for lunch or dinner with a side of french fries or a salad of your preferences.

Ingredients

bacon (approximately 12 slices): 1/2 lb

slices white bread: 8

leaves iceberg lettuce (fresh and full): 8

slices ripened tomatoes: 8

mayonnaise: 8 tbsp

How To Make Classic BLT

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat and cook the bacon strips until they are cooked through and crispy. Transfer the cooked bacon to a papertowel lined plate to drain the excess fat.
  3. Butter both sides of the bread slices and line them on a cookie sheet.
  4. Toast the bread in the oven for 5 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and crispy.
  5. Spread 1 tbsp. mayonnaise on one side of all 8 slices of toasted bread.
  6. Add 1 full leaf of lettuce to 4 slices of mayonnaise layered bread.
  7. Add 2 slices of thinly cut tomatoes on top of the lettuce.
  8. Arrange 3 slices of crispy bacon on top of the tomatoes. Break each strip in half to fit the slice, if needed.
  9. Add another leaf of lettuce on top of the bacon and top with another mayonnaise spread toast to finish.
  10. Serve immediately with condiments of your choice and any side dish you prefer.

Trivia

  • Did you know that although the ingredients of the sandwich have been a part of the American cuisine for a long time, there is little to none evidence of Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato sandwiches prior to the early 1900s?

The earliest written recipe for the sandwich is found in the 1903 edition of Good Housekeeping Everyday Cook Book. The recipe was created by Dr. Kevin Zinter for a sandwich which included mayonnaise, bacon, lettuce, tomato and a slice of turkey between two slices of white bread.
