American sub sandwich also known as a hoagie or American hero is a submarine sandwich that is similar to the Italian sub. While the Italian one used cured ham and cheese from Italy, the American version focuses on American cheeses and deli meats.

Ingredients

sub sandwich bread (you can use a loaf of French, Italian, grain, whole wheat or grain bread): 1 lb

shaved turkey: 1/2 lb

thin sliced salami: 1/4 lb

shaved ham: 1/2 lb

lorraine swiss cheese (thin sliced): 1/4 lb

american cheese (thin sliced): 1/4 lb

tomatoes (sliced into thin slices): 2

sweet yellow onion (thinly slices cut into rings): 1

crisp lettuce as preferred

mayonnaise to preference

honey mustard to preference

salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

How To Make All-American Sub Sandwich

  1. Cut the entire loaf of bread, lengthwise, in half. If you want a toasted sandwich, you can toast the bread in the oven for 10 minutes.
  2. Spread one half of the loaf with as much yellow mustard as you prefer.
  3. Spread the other half of the loaf with liberal amounts of mayonnaise.
  4. Cover both sides of the loaf with lettuce.
  5. Layer the shaved turkey, salami and sliced ham on one side of the loaf.
  6. Then layer the meats with as many slices of Lorraine and American cheese as you prefer.
  7. Top the cheese with slices of tomatoes and onions. You can add jalapeños and black olives on top if you prefer.
  8. Season the entire length of the sandwich with salt and pepper and place the other half of the loaf on top.
  9. Inserts 3-4 party toothpicks on equal distances to secure the two halves of the sandwiches together.
  10. Cut the loaf into 8 slices and serve with condiments and a side of chips or French fries.

Trivia

The submarine sandwich originated in Italy and is thought to be brought over to the US by Dominic Conti. It is believed that he named his version of an Italian sandwich the submarine sandwich after he saw the recovered 1901 submarine, Fenian Ram.
